Summary: tv_sort option to remove one of two overlapping programs
Initial Comment:
I've noticed that a few channels list one program, for
example:
Childrens programs 08.00-09.00 and then several short
programs within that, example:
Tom & Jerry 08.15-08.30
Cartoons 08.35-08.50
and so on.
I want to use the resulting xml with a Tivo and can't
have overlapping programs. So an option to remove them
would be nice.

Message:
I agree with Ed, xmltv format does not support both at the same time in any
sensible way. The data source / grabber should emit either one (the
package) or the other (all the parts) but not both.
Closing as no example of a source of such listings was given for years.
Feel free to upen a bug against any source of such data.

I am considering that the next version of the file format
may ban overlapping programmes altogether. But I'm not sure
on this point yet.

Can you give an example of such overlapping listings, and
say where they came from (which grabber)? Not that it is
needed to implement this feature, but I'd like to make sure
that such output is not normally generated.
A way to remove overlapping programmes, either as an
option to tv_sort or otherwise, sounds useful. There is the
question of which one to remove. Perhaps get rid of the
longer programme and keep the smaller ones inside it -
but then what to do when two overlap but neither contains
the other? What to do when the smaller programmes do
not cover the whole time of the larger programme?
I think I would go for something simple like sorting by
date (ie what tv_sort does now), then taking the earlier
programme whenever two clash and shortening it so it
stops at the time the later one starts, then finally remove
any zero-length programmes thus created. If you let me
know what listings have this problem I can see how well
this approach works.
