Discussion:
[Xmltv-devel] Is sourceforge broken for everyone or just me?

Trying to update/co/diff against sourceforge and I'm just getting:

cvs update: failed to create lock directory for `/cvsroot/xmltv/xmltv'
(/cvsroot/xmltv/xmltv/#cvs.lock): Permission denied
cvs update: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/cvsroot/xmltv/xmltv'
cvs [update aborted]: read lock failed - giving up

Is anyone else seeing this? There's a similar ticket opened today (a
few hours ago as I write this) for another project with the same
problems, so could be an underlying SF issue.

The sooner the XMLTV project is off sourceforge and CVS the better for
everyone. </grumpy>

Cheers,
Nick

Why? One outage in how long? I've confirmed my weekly CVS backup is
running fine.

I have no problems moving to SVN, but dont' see a need to do it either.

(I know git is all the rage, but the commit/push annoys me)

We don't need the extra features of SVN or Git.

Have you tried to interact with the site in the past 12 hours?

Have you not read the tech news in the past week?

Half of the first page of the SF forge tracker is projects asking to
be removed, and the other half is projects who still use CVS being
unable to do any development.

This reads like you don't really use git (or any other DVCS) much at
all, or grok the advantages of being able to commit and branch
locally?

I'd rather everyone have a copy of the project's development history
on their local machine, without needing a network connection.

I'd rather everyone could quickly diff against any version of their
code without needing a network connection.

I'd rather everyone could share a copy of the project's code without
being depdendent on a central server.

I'd rather everyone could use a well-supported VCS in their chosen editor/IDE.

The project should take a poll of all developers before making
pronouncements like that.

Commit security is quite an important feature nowadays, especially
given the BS that SourceForge has been caught pulling again, injecting
malware and adware into Windows installers on the SF site.

CVS has zero commit history security. Last time the CVS platform went
down on the SF site it took how long before it could be restored
because nothing could be trusted?

XMLTV developers who have read this far - have your say please.

I already keep a clean git mirror of the XMLTV CVS repository on
Github. Mattias and I have abondoned using the SF CVS platform for the
supplement file syncing service because it was just too flaky.

Cheers,
Nick

My vote: the sooner xmltv moves to Git the better.
(and I'd rather avoid the knock-offs)

Theory is where you know everything but nothing works.
Practice is where everything works but nobody knows why.
Sometimes they go hand in hand: nothing works and nobody knows why.

+1

I already use a local Git mirror to work with xmltv and sync back and
forth to CVS. Being able to use Git natively would be a great plus.

Nick,

All valid points, thank you. I'm not doing much XMLTV dev work, but if
you and other active devs want to move, we should move. I just didn't
see much point to the migration work.

I look forward to reading other's comments.

Robert

I'm not fussed really. I usually try and avoid git but that's because I'm on XP so most of the Windoze graphical tools don't work for me. But I suppose I could use Cygwin or TortoiseGit.

CVS is an additional barrier of entry when we have a hard time to
convince people to take care of a grabber and follow terms of service
already.

Moving to GIT appears to be the best move because TV related projects
upstream and downstream use GIT mostly, too. (that and Bazaar, but
that's the exception. not the rule)

We've been at this point more then four years ago already. Lets move on
this time. https://sourceforge.net/p/xmltv/mailman/message/27038175/

I think moving to Github as the main repository for everything but the
mailing lists and file distribution would be a good move. Many people
have their singular grabber or a mirror of our complete repository
over there already https://github.com/search?q=xmltv

Karl

SF has clearly been having CVS issues over the last day but glad to
see access (for XMLTV developers) has been restored.

Perhaps a bigger reason than the CVS vs. Git debate is the current tactic of SF to hi-jack projects (locking out the original devs!) and add bundled wrapware to software downloads. This is perhaps harder with non-Windows software but the risk still exists.

Only yesterday yet another project left SF -
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/news/notepad-plus-plus-leaves-sf.html

I think XMLTV should be deleted from SF servers asap, don't even leave it behind as a mirror. Not only to protect the project but also to express solidarity with the open source development community who have been adversely affected by SF's actions.

I too am troubled with these tactics by SF and am all for moving to GitHub
and clearing out the SF cvs repo.

Wow... I didn't know what happened to Sourceforge.. sad.. really sad.

I'm convinced. I still don't like Git, but github is the current
"standard" for such things. I can live with it.

What's the best procedure? Should I (or someone else) create a github
account for XMLTV?

Nick, ,do you want to take point on this? I'll be back from vacation
next week and be more in touch.

More than happy to take this forward. I'll get an account setup for
XMLTV on GitHub in the next day or so.
